A BIM coordinator attempting a sheet-metal quantity take-off from an IFC model encountered a critical data gap preventing accurate area calculations. The dashboard revealed that out of one detected duct segment, there were zero valid dimensions. Because the geometry was encoded as an IfcTriangulatedFaceSet rather than an IfcExtrudedAreaSolid, parametric dimensions could not be extracted. Consequently, the rounded total surface area returned as N/A, blocking the under-1 square meter rounding rule. Without these dimensions, engineers cannot determine the required metal gauge thickness or apply a metal thickness gauge for fabrication. This technical diagnosis allowed the coordinator to request a properly extruded model from the design team.

IFC models must use extruded area solids rather than tessellated geometry to enable parametric area take-offs.
